We've found that sometimes we'd want the windows tinted, sometimes not (like on a beautiful drive when we want to see out in all directions), and sometimes we'd want the windows completely obscured. This includes the front and front-side windows. What we found works well is a few sets of the "spring-open" window shades (a nylon-like fabric, silver on one side, with a springy wire rim that allows it to fold into a small shape, and then "spring" into it's fully open shape) and a few bar-magnets (available from Home Depot). If we're on a long drive, or if we're going to be parked in the sun for some extended period, we put the screens where we want them. I think it you follow John's and others advice about going to a good local shop this really shouldn't be an issue. He should know what the local laws are. that said I would agree as long as you don't over tint the front and two side windows you should be fine. The center and rear windows could be darker but I would check with a local installer myself before doing anything.
