Then there's the story of the German immigrant arriving via Ellis Island. Upon reaching the point where his immigrant papers were being prepped he was asked in English "What's your name" to which he replied in German "Nicht Verstehen" ( I don't understand"). Noticing the puzzled look on his face the clerk asked again, What's your name?" To which he received the same reply. The clerk, shrugged his shoulders, smiled and replied as he filled in the card, "Welcome to America Nick". As a result "Adolph Schmitt" became "Nick Verstayan"
