This is not exactly on target for the issue you raise but consider getting a console with cup holders. I was also frustrated by the lack of cup holders in my 89 Westy 4 speed but did not like the options you describe. I found a very sound console at http://community- 2.webtv.net/vanstuff/VanagonWestfalia/ It's reasonably priced, has four cup holders,lots of storage space, and the color exactly matches the interior of my Westy. I got more than I expected and am very happy with it.
