I'm sure you'll get some great first-hand experience responses from people in your area. I am in Utah and very rarely pay for camping. There are so many places to camp that don't require fee's and still allow camping here that it isn't usually an issue. Check the internet for camping, paid or otherwise, along the beach front communities you are likely to camp in. If need be, "google" and I'm sure you're going to get a bundle of information.
