I took a metal clothes hanger (remember those?!) and straightened it out. I bent the end into a hook to catch the door lock knob. I inserted the hook end thru the gasket at the vent wing near the top, pushed the wire in until I got it hooked around the stem of the door lock, and pulled it up. No problem and minimal damage.
