The problem is slow warm up on "cold" startup, even when the temperatures
are warm, leading to increased wear on the engine and a tendency to dilute
your oil with excess gas. I'll bet you $10 and give you 5 to 1 odds you
won't find a good used thermostat in a junkyard. I know I never have.
