Not sure how much gear you're talking about. The PO of mine put a false-gutter-mount rack, Thule Summit Black Box on the roof and because it's placed near the back of the van it doesn't inhibit raising the roof much due to weight. Works well. The only thing you need to carry then is a collapsible stool. You can also use the canvas bags made for the front luggage compartment or just make your own. I've used a large plastic tarp placed in the luggage bin then put everything in the bin and fold the tarp over it, then bungie that load down. Both methods keep things pretty accessible and dry.
