Since it only leaked after a high spedd run, I would check to make sure the breather in the front nose cone is not blocked with gook, mud, etc. Also, avoid overfilling. Gear box must be level when filling and the level should be ~9/16" below the fill plug opening. Side to side is as important as front/rear. Overfilling will cause the gear oil to foam up, get hot, and push out the seals.

I'm driving my 86 Vanagon GL too fast (80+) up hill and she spewed her gear oil all over the side of the trans case. I was able to drive her 100 miles home with no problems or strange noises. I filled her up with gear oil started her up to look for leaks, no leaks. Test drove her up to 55mph, still no leaks.

Any ideas which seal this might be? If it's the axle seal how hard is it to get the axle cup off? Should a puller do the trick without bending it?

Benn off lurking for a while.
