Subject: 86 Vanagon - Engine won't start
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

We hope we can get some input on this: While driving our Van died on us. Just died. No warnings of any sort. We looked in the engine compartment and the alternator seemed to have been fried. Actually, it literary fried.

I replaced the alternator and belt but the Van will still not start. I was told that when the alternator fries like that, an overload takes place and other ignition/timing components may be damaged.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. We tried a couple of tests for some components and they seemed to be fine. We also replaced the ignition coil and ignition spark plug wires, including the spark plugs. The engine cranks fine and spark goes through the plug wires, but we seem to be getting no spark in the engine, and we smell gas after cranking it for a couple of times. We assume it is an ignition/timing issue.

Vanagon 1986, 2.1 gas MV engine, Digifant
