The auto tranny is the stronger of the two in the world of Vanagons, and will most likely give you the longest trouble free service. Besides that, the auto tranny can be rebuilt out of the common shop toolbox, for the most part. The manual tranny cannot.......requires special jigs for re-assembly. The manual tranny has some inherent internal troubles, like internal hubs cracking.and sliders failing. I wouldn't go there if I were you. Besides, all that clutching will give you left knee problems and set you up as a candidate for knee replacement!!!!

Regards,

John Rodgers 88 GL Driver with manual tranny, and looking for a NEW left knee! ( for some applications I don't believe in used parts!!)
