I have an 86 vanagon with a 2.1L. I just fired it up after rebuilding the engine, and it's not running very well at all. The idle is rough, and it seems like it's missing. First thing I did was run a compression test, and compression was ok (125 - 130) New spark plugs looked like maybe it was running rich. Wasn't sure if I plugged the fuel injector wires in correctly. I marked them when I pulled the engine 6 weeks ago, but my marks weren't very distinct, so I kind of had to guess. It doesn't seem to make much difference if I plug them in the other way though. I'm wondering what is the next thing I should check. Maybe the O2 sensor? Or maybe the Idle Contol Unit? But it's running bad all the time, not just at idle...I know I put the distributor drive shaft in 180* out, but I turned the distributor around, and the timing marks line up, so it seems like the timing is ok. Hopefully someone can tell me what to check next. Thanks.
