I've heard this many times, as I too have a van where the temp gauge creeps up, although the radiator fan never seems to come on (and I've tested it and the temp sensor in the rad). And while I would be prone to believe that it's just the stupid gauge that's off, my van will mark it's spot on the ground with coolant when it's too warm (so I think I've got an air pocket trapped). ANYWAYS... my point of the rambling is...

Where do you need to take temperatures, and what sort of temperature should you see? The operating temp for most watercooled VWs is 90*C, so I presume you should see that at the thermostat area. So what temp should the bottom, and the top of the rad be? Temp of rad inlet? Temp of rad outlet? Temp of passenger's side head?
