Subject: Air Filter Hose, '91 2WD
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Howdy Folks, I know this has been mentioned before, but today I saw it for myself. I recently performed a Subaru transplant on my '91 2WD automatic transmission Carat. In the course of cleaning things up, today I removed the snorkel duct and intake from the RH rear body pillar that used to feed air to the air intake on the VW air filter, (not being used now). The assembly consists of a plastic air intake opposite the RH grille at the top facing rearwards retained by two rubber bushings, an oval shaped hose (think of a larger version of the old air-cooled fan duct hoses) and a bottom elbow with a drain hole attached to a false wall (that you see the plastic air filter hose in the engine compartment RH side attach to) with a pop rivet. I pulled the whole assembly out though the engine side and disassembled it. The inner paper portion of the hose connecting the intake plastic to the elbow at the bottom had separated and bunched up in various places and was blocking flow by approximately 50 to 75%. No, I had not had any drivability problems with the old engine except in cold (32 degrees F) foggy weather, when occasionally it would run rich and bog (any aviators recall rime or impact ice? Hey, I'm just an A&P mech). At least in the interest of air flow efficiency, it might be a good thing to look at. Thanks, Dave Milo
