Subject: Re: Behr AC removal -- anyone done it?

I have one of the Behr units that Robert removed in my 90 Syncro Westy. He's right....Its a Behr to remove..... AND a Behr to put in...but it works...

It has two big squirrel cage fans that move a lot of air..at least from the passenger side vent and the center vent....not much from the driver's side vent...but it's nice to have that much air blowing on you from the front. It draws its air supply from under the dash ...no outside vent...so it takes a while to cool down air thats heated up in a closed van...but once it does it works well.

Its old technology...like a lot of other Vanagon equipment...its big and you lose about 1/2 your glovebox and the center vents go into your radio slot...and there's a lot of hose and fittings that go from the engine bay to the front of the van so lots of opporunity for leaks.... My hoses leaked after only a few months of being installed....and I'm having to have some new ones made.

If I was looking to install front air...I would get newer technology...but since you've got it...keep it....the labor to remove it isn't worth what you can get for it.

By the way...Larry Chase's system isn't a Behr system...its another system installed by European Cooler Air in Dallas, TX...don't know who makes the components.

The ECA evaporator/fan unit is new technolgoy, much smaller than the Behr and can be installed without removing the dashboard...which is nice....But Larry had mixed reviews on his installation right after it was done....although I haven't seen any comments on it in his travel reports....either negative or positive on its long term use.

Larry...how about a long term use report on your system.
