Subject: Wiring tach triggered oil pressure alarm - ?? - help

Today I finally got around to finishing wiring the tach in my 85 Wolfsburg Weekender. It has an 87 dash that I put in months ago.

Only problem is that when I connected the wire to the coil, the oil pressure alarm and light started going after a few minutes or when it gets over about 3500 rpm - can't exactly tell what is the trigger point. Tach works great. Nice smooth movement, reads exactly as one would expect from the engine sounds.

Van has enough oil. Oil pressure light and alarm don't come on when I disconnect the tach wire from the coil, and didn't ever before today. About 17k on a rebuilt engine from a very reputable rebuilder. Seriously doubt I have oil pressure issues. Oil pressure light, as always, lights up at cranking and then goes out. Reconnect and they do come on.

Haven't driven it very far with it screaming at me. Of course, the first time it worried me seriously, but I was only a half a block from the house. Stopped, checked the oil, and drove back home.

Disconnected, no sounds, so I went for gas and another errand with no indication of a problem.

So, is there some careless error I could have made in wiring, or something about the 87 cluster that would cause this? Or a likely point for some sort of short in the cluster wiring?

For now the wire is not connected as I have to drive carpool 42 miles round trip in the morning.

Thanks in advance for your help. Not urgent, but it was frustrating to think I had it all done correctly and then have this unexpected problem.

Sam
