I have one of those Spring Bar tents, 9'X7' that I've set up for more space just outside the van door. What I didn't have at that time was the awning I now have. I imagine that being able to extend the awning out over the tent would create a really nice "space" for privacy and convenience, almost like creating a small "yard" on that side of the van.

I got the Spring Bar years ago ('84, I think) at a local outdoor store, the one that made my rear hatch screen, Kirkham's (http://www.kirkhams.com/). That model shown is almost identical to mine except it has an awning on it and mine doesn't.

I like that it creates more space and you can take the van and travel for the day and the tent maintains your camping space if that's a factor.
