I'd say "does it work?" and "does it look right on the car?" are the main criteria, here. I'd say the Vanagon tail lights qualify.

One old trick for this sort of thing is to use a common part in an uncommon way. I vaguely recall some exotic car using an utterly common taillight assembly from a production car, but flipping it upside down. Wish I could remember the details.
