Chris DeLong >> Not necessarily so; OEM is not OE. In my experience, this statement is untrue. I have installed Dansk exhaust systems on both a 1.9 and a 2.1 and neither could even smell the durability of the VW parts. Couple that with the atrocious fit of the aftermarket pipes and they are no bargain at all. Not only do the VW pipes last at least twice as long, they do it without the bracket lugs breaking off and the flanges eroding away to nothing. Page 33 of Water-Cooled Vanagon, Introductory Service Information (WSP521-112-00) states, "The manifolds and collector pipe are made from a CAST IRON alloy which is 3.5 mm thick for good heat resistance and long service life." I have wondered if this is a misnomer from translating the German text, or if VW does make the pipes from some form of malleable iron. Whatever they use certainly lasts longer than the Dansk tubing. About 15 years ago when I needed to renew an exhaust system, I called Gordi at 4ever4. He said he only used VW OE exhaust parts. After I whined about the cost, I asked him if he had a line on a stainless system. He said, "Look, a VW OE exhaust part lasts 75000 - 90000 miles. What more could you ask for?" He was right. And, I think Gordi is in one of those balmier climates . . . like New Hampshire. George |
