Favorite board death story -- while chasing surf down on the outer banks of NC a friend and I found ourselves behind a couple kids w/ boards on top of their car. In what seemed like slow motion we saw the boards bounce a couple times and then fly completely off the top of their car, spinning into the air in front of us. Dave slams the brakes to avoid getting impaled and one board falls out of the sky right in front of us, barely missing the grill, but getting squished. I have no idea where the other board went. End result? Vanagon 1, surfboard 0 and only a little wax on the tire to show what happened. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

A couple more before this thread gets squished...

A mate of mine lost a board off his '72 VW panelvan many years ago and the thing got enough air to land away from the road and up in a tree. It was too high and difficult to climb and the board was really stuck. After an hour or two of chucking rocks at it in a rather dumb attempt to free it and failed attempts to hook it with a rope,he gave up and had to leave it there. The following year he returned on his next surfing sojourn to that part of the coast and the board was still there lodged in the tree :)

I also once saw the aftermath of a bunch of boards that had been tied to racks on an old rusty car...It wasn't a VW so I took no interest in what it actually was...;) Anyway a passing truck had got the boards airborne but along with the boards came the racks and the car's roof gutters too. It all landed right side up on the edge of the road with all boards OK and still strapped to the racks, and the car stopped up the road sans roof gutters...

Well it amused me anyway...;)
