    I'm also going to remove the hinge from the battery box to make it
easier to access.  I'm still going to have the cover in place, but use a
different way of attaching the lid and carpet.
Anyone have any ideas on this?
                                           

Eric,

I installed two swivel seats (as mine is not a full camper) some years
ago...they were the bolt-on type requiring no welding but it makes no
difference regarding the battery lid...anyway what I did was this...

I drilled out the rivets that hold the two lids to the hinges and
removed the lids.I then removed the remaining rivets
to separate the hinges completely from the lids.
Turning the lids around so that the finger hole to open them now faced
towards the rear of the van,I found that the
lids would slide back in place,held from falling into the compartments
by the little bumps that kept the hinged lid
in place when closed.There were also some little metal clips that had to
be removed but they were only a snap on thing
so were removed easily without any mods to the vehicle.

The lids now fit neatly back in place (albeit facing the opposite
direction)and open by simply sliding forward.
Only problem,if you can call it that,is the one on the non-battery side
(the passenger's side in my case) does tend
to slide open eventually on it's own...like once a week or so but that
would be easily solved by a pin or some such
securing device if deemed necessary....I find it easier just to lean
over and slide it shut again...;)

The one on the battery side never slides open uninvited...no doubt the
tight clearance to the battery helps in
this regard...

Everything is reversible should for some reason I wanted to remove the
swivel seat mechanisms and return to the original configuration...all
I'd need was a few rivets...

I can take a pic if you wanna see this arrangement...
