Hi Andrew

Thank you very much for good info.

That is a lot of electrical juice those heaters are drawing from the battery - ouch! Makes me think that they are generating the heat purely electrical :-)

I do not need the heater for overnight heating - I will need it when driving. But still, it will place some burden on the batery even then...

I am glad about the info that 2KW should be enough for a Vanagon bus.

I saw yesterday under the bus, that the heater that was there before I got the bus was mounted so it blew hot air into the back of the cabin, as well as injected hot air into the cardboard/foam main duct, so that there also was defrosting capacity.

Interesting.

Happy driving

Jens Jakob

When shopping for a heater for a vanagon the main consideration is almost always electrical draw not heat output. Im pretty sure all of the gasoline heaters are at least 12,00 BTU or 3.5 KW that is plenty for the vanagon, in fact 6000 BTU is usually enough for the vanagon. The problem is that most of the gasoline heaters draw 3-7 amps which means you'll need a huge deep cycle battery to keep it going and you'll need to charge it up everyday. There are 2 heaters that ive found which meet these requirements, the atwood star everest (1.8 amps, 12,000 btu $385 new), or the plat cat (6,000 btu, 0.5 amps $450 rebuilt if you can find one).
