Alistair,

Thanks for the correction. In fact I spent about an hour today pulling posts from Frank Grunthaner (more people to follow) in preparation for my eventual engine conversion and felt admonished about my post after reading some of them. Noise is probably the biggest question I have, access to other transmissions is next. The tranny in my Carat is grinds a little in first and the diesel tranny I got in my parts van is covered with shavings on the inside.

If you had the choice (besides a 5sp) what Vanagon tranny would you put in?

(btw- Frank wisely mentions measuring the input shaft hole in the crank no matter what, just to make sure... Sounds good to me!)
