The yellow and white wires are there on all 86 and newer models. If you spliced into any other colors you messed up. With the lower cover off you can see the green wiper wires readily but the headlight wires are inside a black plastic sleeve. The sleeve can be left alone as the place where you need to splice into those wires is in a part that is not covered by the sleeve. VW tied the yellow and white wires firmly against some other wires and they may not be obvious. You need to stand outside with the door open and get your head and arms under there to cut the plastic ties that hold all the wires in a tight bundle near the steering column. Then pull the yellow and white wires out where you can work on them.

85 and older models used a white and a yellow/black stripe for these wires.
