ON my 'other type of VW' w/ a Hall Sender type distributer I found the following:

1) The car ran like it was on three cylinders that morning on the way to work.

2) No amount of trying to pull spark plug wires would track down which was at fault.

3) If I revved it up past 3K it would run OK.

4) Once I got off the freeway and let the revs down it had gotten worse and the motor died.

5) I was able to find the Hall Sensor clip on the side of the Dist was loose and broken- but more importantly the wires inside (three of them) were burnt and brittle.

Turns out the wires would pass a simple connectivity test but wouldn't pass enough current to make a good signal to the Ign box.

Swapped the Dist (there are repair kits out there) from the pick n pull because it was economical and speedy.
