Sigh... oh all right....

45

First car was a '65 bug. Second car was a '67 bus, I learned early on that VW buses are just way too underpowered, and also quickly learned that the type 1 motor could make a lot more HP with a little (or a lot) of help. Favorite type 1 motor was 2110cc, 10.4:1 comp, dual 44 IDF Webers... in my '67 bus. The summer of '79 I spent most of my wednesday evenings at the now defunct Baylands drag strip in Fremont, Ca. Best time of 15.82 seconds with a trap speed of 80.5 MPH. Exploded the tranny one night and put the 2110 in a '64 baja bug. Put 67,000 miles on that motor before selling the bug. Three weeks later, the new owner rolled the bug at nearly 3 digit speeds totalling bug, motor, and his left leg...

I've owned 2 '67 buses, 1 '66, and 1 '69 Dunno how many beetles... There were at least 6 that were daily drivers and and maybe that many more that lived in the driveway at one time or another waiting for their time to come... Oldest daily driver VW was my '58 sunroof (rag) bug.

By 1995 I was done with my "VW days" and turned to other vehicles (what friends and family refer to as "real" cars) I figured I'd probably never own another VW bus again...

Fast forward to Valentines day 2003 ... when I bought my first Vanagon ('86) and "re-entered" the VW world. Quickly learned that VW buses are STILL way underpowered... and convert to subaru power. YIPPEE! I've rediscovered the joy of driving a VW bus, and UH-OH!, now there's a SECOND vanagon ('84) in the driveway. Once an addict, always an addict..... (-:
