Actually Stan, The plug blew because our fan resistor up front was dead which stopped the fan from coming on. Since the low fan speed hadn't worked since we bought the van, I didn't know it was bad. Anyway, the lack of a fan caused the condenser coil to overheat, which built up to much head pressure and blew the plug. If the R/D had been clogged, the pressure would have never made it THRU the R/D to the plug. Instead it would have blown the hose that runs from the condenser to the R/D.

I hadn't heard of it either until I looked in the Bentley, AND I unscrewed the dumb thing from the top of the R/D and held it in my own two hands. Take a peak at the page I cited in the original post (87.7)...better yet take a 15 mm box wrench and use it to remove that funny looking plug with the hex that sits right above the sight glass. I swear I didn't make this up.

And now back to my original question. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for this???

Thanks again! Rod Woten '87 Westy Des Moines, Iowa

I've never heard of a safety plug on an air conditioner dryer. I have seen a sight glass under a rubber plug on some dryers. I'd say that if you feel that your drier is the exception to the rule and did have a safety pop off then you need to replace the dryer because the fact that the plug is missing would indicate a stopped up dryer, that the dryer safety performed as designed or that the dryer is simply ready for replacement.

All,

Finally got around to finding the leak in our '87 Westy. It appears that the safety plug that sits atop the receiver/dryer, in the driver's side rear wheelwell, has blown it's plug. It's basically a threaded plug with a hex bolt head on the top. The center has a hole where, I'm surmising, a small hard rubber plug once resided. It almost looks like an LP orifice with an oversized hole. Bentley refers to this little dandy on page 87.7.Does anyone sell these valves/plugs. Ron @ Busdepot, Ken @ Vanagain? Or will any A/C shop have something that will work? I'd like to get this replaced so I can diagnose the rest of our A/C system.

TIA!!! Rod Woten '87 Westy Des Moines, Iowa
