I would add that the minimum screen rez you can get away from, without scrolling around, is 1152 x 865, just shy of the stated 1280 x 1024.

Now, some screens or cards wont provide incremental choices like that but it's worth a try.

I found this out because the screen I had wouldn't deal with the frequency req for the higher rez.

btw- I have heard nothing really good about the CD version, I too recommend it should augment the real paper version.
