What others have said is no doubt true. Good sharp bits should do the trick. I have noticed, though, that the pillar and some other areas have double or more thicknesses of sheetmetal and are especially difficult to drill. You have to be careful not to push so hard as to snap the bit. Once you get a hole these areas of multiple thicknesses are difficult to screw into with a sheet metal screw. I have twisted off several screw heads trying to put in snaps for screen (as an example).

------- A cobalt bit should have *no* trouble going through flimsy VW sheet metal. I certainly had no problem drilling my pillar for a fire extinguisher bracket.
