Jeff, In my 84 Westfalia, I added 1" foam padding underneath the fabric on the backrest. It was very easy: take the seats out of the van, remove the bolts that attach the backrest, unhook the fabric at the bottom, slide up the fabric, cut the foam to fit, slide the fabric back down and reattach. Maybe 45 min for both seats. I got the foam at an upholstery shop, I think this would be nicer than trying to scavenge it from a boneyard. I used the same foam to supplement the mattress in the upper bunk - made a huge difference.

Cheers, Jeff Kennedy personal.riverusers.com/~kennedy/van_mods.htm

I've been looking at later model velour GL front seats. It seems to have substantially more padding than the stock seat in my NON-GL 83 Westfalia. I have the old school blue and brown striped fabric seats--NOT the velour seats.
