Well, the question is why didn't they do it that way to begin with and save half the plumbing? The only thing I can think of is that if you lose vaccuum (maybe you go to WOT for long enough for the reservoir to bleed down, or your check valve fails) the diff lock would disengage, maybe at an inopportune moment.
