I would think the asphalt-type sound deadening - if anything - will repel water, not soak it up.

If you decide to go the pink-fibreglass route, that's another story. All the reasons against that are quietly lurking and growing behind your fridge, inside the rear hatch, etc...

sound deadening/koolpatch/rubberized undercoating/insulation will MAKE rust. more crap to trap moisture. BTDT. ive parted out quite a few vans that had "custom insulation jobs" and they were far more decomposed than vans without insulation/undercoating to trap the moisture/salt etc.. dont add all that undercoating/insulation crap if you plan to keep your van more than 5 yrs..

if y'all want to see some rust, pull your kitchen units out and look behind all that insulation down on the floor, under the 3 inlet ports on the exterior.. ive got a westy parts van that the water poured in around the 3 inlets everytime it rained (just like its doing in YOUR westy, if you havent caulked around the inlets) and got so bad it completely turned the horizontal middle beam behind the drivers side body, and the rocker, and the main frame rail - to dust..rust shale..... i can literally poke my hand thru the side of the van.. all that insulation back there never let it dry out..perfect recipe for destruction..
