I'm just about to do the same job today on my  newly acquired 1990 Carat.  Do
not use sealant.  Use liberal amounts  of a rust preventive oil such as Krown
on both the seal and the metal lip.   The rope trick it the only way to go.
Make sure the ends are at the top  centre and crossed a good 12 inches to
insure you don't loose an end in the  process.
