While I don't know the threads of each one, here is when the change took place, within the 1987 model year:

VW 253 067 285 Drain Cap, Water Tank To SN J00001 (USA), J00075 (Canada)

VW 255 070 802 C Drain Cap, Water Tank From SN J00002 (USA), J00076 (Canada)

Note - the Serial Numbers referred to above are the WESTFALIA Manufacturer Serial Numbers on the plate affixed to the rear seat box (most models - some others are elsewhere). The Serial Numbers above in no way correspond with the actual VIN of the Vanagon from Hannover.

Source: Parts Catalog Microfiche, Camper P21, P27S, P30 Mod 84> (E-L), dated 1-1989 [I also consulted an earlier fiche describing items for the 80-84 Westfalia as well for earlier applications).

I've been working on this issue since the above post from May 3, and have obtained a few of each cap - the earlier style and the later style - from a small German company. The difference between the early and later style is the thread pitch. However the supplier doesn't know exactly what year the change occurred, other than to say he believes it to have been 1986 or 1987. None of my resources list it either; in fact the part number doesn't even come up anymore because it's been discontinued for so long.

Can anyone on the list provide any further feedback as to what year this change occurred? (From Warren's post, above, I already know that it was no later than 1988.) If nobody has specific info, perhaps if I could get a "thread count" from listmembers who had an '85 thru '87 Vanagon we could narrow it down to the particular year it changed. I'd like to be able to offer these, since they've been unavailable for so long. But without knowing where the exact year break is, I'd be afraid to send one to anyone with an '86-87 Westy. Once I can narrow this down I can order a larger quantity and this part will be available again.

Thanks for your help!
