Subject: BAD OIL LEAK
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

New problem with the Vanagon. Bad oil leak from the back side of the engine....

Pulled the transmission. Oil all over the bellhousing and back of the engine. Looks like the main seal is leaking. I just put my motor together about a month ago, so it doesn't seem like the seal itself would be worn that soon. The only thing I can think is that big shim that goes in right behind the main seal. Not the ones that are used to set the endplay, but the big, thin one that goes around the outside. It's bent, and it has nicks and dents in it. I can't remember if I did that when I took it out, or if maybe some previous mechanic did.

I know that shim is supposed to be straight, but would it affect the main seal if its not? Could it be rubbing on the lip of the seal somehow? And what is that shim for anyway? It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the endplay, because it doesn't contact the other shims.
