The brochure of that year should have the estimated mileage if you can find
one. search google for vintage brochure sales. I don't have a brochure from
that year.
I have an 83.5 brochure for the watercooled gasoline engine Vanagon which
show the estimated gas mileage with a manual transmission as 19 MPG city and--
ARE YOU SITTING-- 27 MPG for the highway. Now I'll give VWOA that the national
speed limit in 83 was 55MPH, but even then c'mon 19 MPG CITY! "Use estimated
mpg for comparison to other cars. Your actual mileage may vary with speed,
weather and trip length. Highway Mileage will probably be less." It should say
"Your actual mileage will vary if you live anywhere other than the fantasy
world!" And outside the fantasy world I would say it definately will vary unless you
drive down hill both ways. (Automatic trans. 19 City, 24 Highway)
I don't want to think about what I get in city driving my 83.5 Westfalia with
gasoline here at $2.50 a gallon, but highway I seem to remember the best I've
ever gotten was 21 MPG and that was in the flats of Kansas. I was pretty
proud at that. And for what the Westfalia provides the mpg is pretty good--for an
RV. I also guess the mileage in the brochure was for a non-Westfalia, although
it doesn't break it down that way.
Other VW MPG from corresponding brochures I have:
1983.5 Vanagon/Camper watercooled 4sp 19 City 27 Highway
1983.5 Vanagon/Camper watercooled auto 19 City 24 Highway
1988 Vanagon/Camper w 4 speed 16 City 18 Highway
