I currently own a VW sports car. It's a stock '87 Vanagon with cool wheel
covers. It's really fast and sporty. The older it gets the more people
seem to think its cool.

I also owned a Scirocco (1978 Limited Edition). It was a fine sports car,
surprised a lot of people with it's handling ability.
It was no Testarossa, but it didn't retail for $175,000.00 either.

Ben is right - that's what got me into the whole sports car thing (we had a
Jag 120 and Triumph TR3 when I was a kid). I still miss my Sciroccos - dumb
to have sold them. My new beetle handles like a big cow in comparison.

You folks are leaving out the Brazilian SP2. and European Type 3 Karmann
Ghia. The Audi (VW in my eyes) also built the 924/924S/944/944 cars.
And you Scirocco detractors should look at your old Road and Track (and
other similar publications). During the 70's, it was considered that the
Scirocco "redefined" the meaning of the word sportscar. It outrun,
out-braked, and out-handled the typical sportscars of the era. yes, MG's,
Healey's big and small, Alfas, etc. were considered sportscars then. If you
ask your father or someone who was an adult in the 40's and 50's you will
find that the quintessential British roadster met their definition of the
term sportscars.
