Subject: vanagon tech data request for CFD (pretty nerdy)
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hello list,

I tried to search the net for a couple random bits of tech data on the vanagon (in particular, the westy), but couldn't really find much of what i wanted, even though i know i've seen it out there before. Basically, i grabbed my work computer for the long canadian weekend and am supposed to be learning a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) software, and figured what better thing to analyze than how the wind passes over the van and how heat is swept away...

Yes, i know i am a geek.

Anyway, what i need for now is two things: 1) Body dimensions - overalls are necessary, but i would also like to include the geometry of the radiator, with the duct behind that, and also the engine/transmission compartment area. 2) Relative heat dissipation (best guess) of the engine and radiator. Something along the lines of assuming 90hp, x% efficiency = "y"hp waste heat, then however this is divided between the radiator and the actual engine itself. I'll probably make a best guess (which won't be all that good) so it would be nice to have one of you feed me some more reliable numbers.

For those who care, i'm going to approach this as a series of 2D problems, just taking a slice of the middle of the van (between driver and passenger) to give a representative view of how the air flows over and through the vehicle. I might also do another slice somewhere along the length of the van to see how air flows around the sides, but that'll get kind of tricky since there is no symmertry that way. I'd probably have to go 3D for that, and i don't think i have the time right now to wait at least half a day for the analysis... especially since i am supposed to be doing "real" work :-)

Anyway, i know this is kind of an odd request, but i'm pretty sure some of you might be interested. Also, i think the software that i am using (CFDesign) has a free viewer you can download, so if someone wants to host the results, people can view and manipulate the results on their own...

Thanks for reading this far, -Damon
