Considering that no manufacturer has yet to equal the versatility of our Vanagons and Westfalias, I would say that rebuilding the vehicle is a viable option, to include replacing the powerplant with a modern TDI unit and upgrading the brakes. The TDI engine would give you plenty of power with increased economy and the vehicle upgrades, such as sound deadening, replacing the whistling door and window seals, replacing all suspension bushings and so on, would result in a very livable and even more pleasant vehicle that can compete with many of the modern offerings.

If you drive what you love, there's no substitute.
