Back in the days before modern "better living through chemistry" sealers, they used to use a piece of silk thread to seal the case halves on aviation engines. But there are better alternatives now.

The best one I have found...or to be more precise was put on to by a friend & VW mechanic is Curil K2. Case halves,tappet covers,fuel pumps...whatever.Never hardens,easy to scrape away and works exceptionally well....smells great too ;)
