one thing i've found very useful with jackstands ... cut some 1-inch (25mm) thick marine plywood (so it doesn't come unglued when/if it gets wet) into a square at least a couple of inches wider on each side than the jackstand. then put the square of plywood under the jackstand. helps gain a little height, but mostly it keeps the base of the jackstand from sinking into the dirt/gravel/asphalt driveway. or damaging the concrete driveway, if you're lucky enough to have that sort of driveway. :)

most of the time, you can find remnants or scraps at home-depot or lowe's or somewhere ... they've sold 1/2 a sheet and have few customers for the leftovers, so they'll sell it cheap. they even cut it up for me. :)
