The best tool for removing those retaining clips is, in my experience, a short, flat prybar with a 90 degree bend in one end. I figured this out when I had an aircooled bus. The 90-degree end works for prying the clip out of its little depressions, then you can use the longer end to pry it the rest of the way down.

Muir says to walk them off with a couple of open-end wrenches, but that takes forever.
