Not the case in Canada. There has been a resurgence in hatchback cars in the last couple years (including one or two models that aren't available in the US).

The most popular small cars up here these days are little "sporty" wagons. I would imagine it will only be a matter of time before a Civic is available again with a hatch - probably in a wagon-type 4-door.

Given the choice - I'd take a hatch over a trunk any day. What it takes away in looks - it more than makes up for in convenience.

I love the rear deck in the Vanagon. It's raised position along with the "hatch" allows for very simple loading and unloading.

That's because that's just about the only market you can sell a hatchback to, in the U.S. During the 80s hatchbacks got associated with really cheap cars, so now no one wants to drive one because they "look cheap."
