Gerald,
I had thought you were supposed to disconnect the temp sender only.
You have to disconnect the O2 sensor and the crank case vent etc? as well.

  does anybody know the correct gap on the spark plugs for a 2.1 87 
  vanagon?    after i changed mine out  the engine does not want to 
  idle....  (i also changed the rotor, cap, O2 sensor, )...   the plugs 
  that i took out had a smaller gap than the ones i put in
