You folks are leaving out the Brazilian SP2. and European Type 3 Karmann Ghia. The Audi (VW in my eyes) also built the 924/924S/944/944 cars.

And you Scirocco detractors should look at your old Road and Track (and other similar publications). During the 70's, it was considered that the Scirocco "redefined" the meaning of the word sportscar. It outrun, out-braked, and out-handled the typical sportscars of the era. yes, MG's, Healey's big and small, Alfas, etc. were considered sportscars then. If you ask your father or someone who was an adult in the 40's and 50's you will find that the quintessential British roadster met their definition of the term sportscars.
