In the event that you or somebody else makes a dangerously stupid mistake, it's good to have plenty of reserve horsepower to get out of a bad situation. One that comes to mind is one I see here in SoCal all the time; some idiot that misjudged the room he had for passing and the power he had to get it done, leaving him (and others) in a potential head-on 'where's the g*damn third lane?' situation. I've seen a lot of people stomp on the brakes when they see something bad happening around them; that often leaves them sitting ducks to get hit, or has them hitting somebody else due to an uncontrollable braking slide. It also helps cause pile-ups. If I find myself getting into that kind of trouble, I generally stomp on the gas and point the car at a piece of open space. I'd rather be trying to control my own car on or over the shoulder (if it's available) than playing dodge 'em on the road with the other guys.
