AHIP! REAL sports cars don't have roll up windows or built in hard tops.

Does this mean that the big Healeys ceased to be sports cars when they
changed from side curtains to roll-up windows?
Yep
Or that the Jaguar XK-120s
and 140s were sports cars and the XK-150s and XKEs were not
Sure nuff
(had roll up
windows)? Or that the Jaguar coupes were not sports cars
Touring cars,
(had hard tops)?

Yep, high performance cars indeed, sports cars, nope. No sport there
tiddling along with the airconditioning on and the windows rolled up
listening to FM stereo. No "sport" at all...REF: Papa's definition of
sport. ( Ernest Hemingway is Papa, motor racing, bull fighting, extreme
skiing are all sports, the others are games or at best pastimes)
Syncromesh? but why? makes the sport into a game or perhaps even a pastime.
XKSS, XKE, high performance cars, sure, Carrera Speedster, a real sports
car. Hey, sport, keep in mind if driving wasn't a challenge you'd sell the
Vanagoon.
Al... Who owned and drove a passel of them thar sports cars with alufin
drums, sidecurtains often left at home, wind in the face, brooklands
screens, copper faced hammers to change the tyres, pirelli cinturatos, ton
up was an accomplishment not a requirement, armstrong lever shocks in the
back, weber DCOE9 40s, Nardi woodwork, Smiths chronometric tachometers,
bucket seats that felt exactly like sitting in a bucket full of old sheep,
soft tops that you had to assemble out of a miscellany of hoops and rags.
The clock had a winding knob, made by Heuer, called a MonteCarlo, the curta
rode in the glovebox, Geo Lucas made the best headlights. Cooper made the
neatest mirrors, ZF made transmissions and ACB Chapman used a BMC box in the
Lotus which although a twin cam valvetrain actually had three camshafts
(Ford 105E block) So there...Still friday on the left coast where tomatoboy
has exceeded my sportingcars by a big measure. Testarossa Nuovo indeed.
