We were thinking of maybe finding a small (4x6' or so) enclosed cargo trailer to pull behind our 86 2WD Westy for this summer's 2 week trip. There's several reasons for this; - we have 2 100 lb. dogs that travel with us - we have a 2 year old with us - need to take the mountain bikes and kid trailer - and don't feel too keen on leaving my Santa Cruz Superlight on the back of my van when I'm not around. Also would allow us to carry extra firewood, etc. It's getting a little tough inside to shuffle plastic bins, cooler, dogs, car seat, etc, etc. with all the stuff we have to carry. It may be a little better in summer, but in the shoulder seasons around here when you're not sure if you need snow boots or sunscreen, it's nuts.
Just kicking around the idea, so I'd appreciate other's experiences (and no, travelling with less stuff is not an option! Although if anyone is interested in 2 large, hairy husky mix dogs..... nah, the wife would kill me).
