Hi, I have a '91 GL with about 135K miles. When rotating my tires yesterday, I discovered that the left front wheel could be wiggled back and forth because the tie rod was moving relative to the steering rack. This morning I pulled the boot back and verified that the joint where the tie rod connects to the rack is very worn. My question is whether it is practical to replace this tie rod without removing the steering rack from the van. I'd hate to disconnect the PS hoses etc. if I can avoid it. The edge of the connecting nut needs to be driven out of the groove in the shaft of the rack and this is cleverly located on top where it can be seen only with a mirror and it is very close to the crossmember. If I can deal with that, the other question is how to turn the nut loose without putting too much torque on the shaft of the rack. Bentley and Haynes show the shaft held firmly in a soft jawed vice. Has anyone done this? TIA Larry A. |
