This is quite a thread we have going on lubricants. I use synthetic oils in most of my vehicles, and have since the mid 70's. I usually change the oil between ten and fifteen thousand miles(the Audi turbo at ten), but change the filters every three thousand, topping off what is lost when the filter is replaced. My father and I were involved in getting the local VW dealer to convert to synthetic oils in the late 70's. VW of America watched them closely and threatened that any engine failures would be at the dealers expense, there were none. Having your oil analyized is a great way to prove to yourself how long you can safely run synthetic oil. I believe that in the long run synthetics cost less to use, 4 or 5 qts of dino oil every 3,000 miles vs synthetic every 15,000(plus topping off w/every filter change). They will greatly reduce engine wear, thus extending the longevity. Handle extreme heat or cold much better then dino oils, and are more environmentally friendly, fewer oil changes equals less waste oil to dispose of. I have also seen the benfits of synthetic lubricants in two cycle engines, first on powered hanggliders in the 70's, and now on ultralight aviation. A friend, now deceased, flew his ultralight aircraft over Mt Mickinley several times, he saw the light about synthetics in the 70's and never went back to dino oil.
