Rob,

It sounds like your box was missing the envelope containing the three clamps and instruction sheet. We are emailing you separately a pdf (Adobe Acrobat) file of the instruction sheet, and also Priority Mailing you the clamps plus a printed copy of the sheet so you should have it within a couple of days. The horizontal pole does sit in the rain gutter, but three clamps are required to hold it in place. (Please do make sure that the clamps didn't find their way loose somewhere inside the box. They are rather small.) Sorry for the inconvenience.
